Rental switch

Stop renting your softener

Many rental softeners cost more each month than owning one outright. We'll go through your contract with you, explain your options for getting out, and install a system you own, done by a Red Seal licensed plumber.

Your options

Ways out of a rental contract

Every contract is different, and the right way out depends on yours. These are the usual routes. Send us a copy and we'll tell you which ones apply.

  • Your term is upIf your rental term is finished you can usually end it with a phone call and a return. Many people keep paying for years without realizing.
  • Buy out the contractRental companies publish a buyout price that drops the longer you've had the unit. Ask them for it in writing, and we'll factor it into your quote.
  • Cancel & returnSome contracts let you cancel and return the equipment for a fee. We'll disconnect the old unit properly so it's ready to go back.
  • Signed at your door?Ontario has banned uninvited door-to-door sales of water softeners since 2018. A contract signed that way may be void. Consumer Protection Ontario can tell you if this applies.
  • Selling your homeA rental usually has to be paid out or taken over by the buyer. Owning your softener keeps it out of the deal.
  • A lien on your titleSince June 2024, Ontario no longer allows notices of security interest (NOSIs) for household equipment, and old ones are treated as expired. See how to remove one.

How switching works

From rental to owned, without the hassle

  1. Send your contract

Send a photo of your contract or latest bill. We'll check your term, buyout and return terms, and explain them in plain language.

  2. Get a clear quote

We test your water and quote a properly sized system you'll own outright, with no monthly fees.

  3. You close the rental

The contract is in your name, so you make the call to buy out or cancel. We'll tell you exactly what to ask for.

  4. We install

A Red Seal plumber installs your new system and disconnects the rental unit so it's ready to be returned. You can book your yearly service visit the same day.

Questions

Before you switch

Still not sure? Call us and we'll talk it through. There's no charge for looking at your contract.

Can I just stop paying and have you take the unit out?

No. The rental unit belongs to the rental company, and your contract still applies. Close it the proper way first, by buying it out, cancelling or ending it at term. Then the old unit goes back to them. We'll help you work out which option costs least.

What if I'm partway through my contract?

Owning often still works out cheaper, even after a buyout or cancellation fee. Put the numbers in the calculator above, or send us your contract and we'll do the math with you.

Will a new softener work with my plumbing?

Yes. We install to code with a proper bypass and drain. If your existing connections need work, we'll tell you up front and include it in the quote.

Who looks after it once I own it?

We do, if you'd like. You can book a yearly service visit when we install: we test the system (settings, regeneration, valve and bypass) and test your water for hardness, plus iron if it applies. It's $100 plus HST. We also do repairs and resin replacement for the systems we install and for most other brands.

Is this legal advice?

No. This page is general information to help you understand your options. Read your own contract, and for legal questions contact Consumer Protection Ontario or a lawyer.
